Achieving National
Recognition and Sustainability


     In 1998 a National Park Service feasibility study
 recognized the national significance of this region
 and suggested the pursuit of a National Heritage  
 designation.
     The development of this bi-state region as a nation-
 al Heritage Area supports a common commitment seeks to
 preserve our natural and cultural heritage in ways that
 meet the economic needs of the present generation while
 preserving these unique resources for the future.

Little Calumet River
The only remaining natural shoreline
of the Little Calumet River forms the
Great Bend near Riverdale-Blue Island.
