Opportunities

The Calumet region supports the fullest range of receational activities. Wolf Lake ranks as one of the best spots for windsurfing. Canoeing, hiking and birdwatching opportunities range from simple roadside access to complex trails requiring care and experience. In both Indiana and Illinois, an increasingly extensive system of bike ways is developing to reach into almost all parts of the proposed National Heritage Area. The cross-country American Discovery Trail and Grand Illinois Trail will both pass through the area when they are fully developed. Wolf Lake and other spots offer some of the best fishing spots in the bi-state

      Heritage and ecosystems can be 
understood through visits to Pullman 
and and other districts and to nature
centers and local history museums
in both Indiana and Illinois.
      For railroad buffs, the bistate
region is crossed by the South Shore
line, America's last fully operating
electric interurban line.
