Preserving the Region

Recognizing the values of the region,
residents, spearheaded by Lake Calumet Study
Committee, developed a set of ideas as early
as 1985 to create a preserve and recreational
area. This led, in 1983, to the creation of
the Calumet Ecological Park Association to
pursue the vision.
     Congressman George Sangmeister and his
successor, Congressman Jerry Weller, supported
these ideas. In 1996, Congress mandated that
National Park Service conduct a feasibility
study of the Calumet region. Numerous organiz-
ations contributed to this effort. After public
review, study results were publicized in early
1998 on the Lincolnnet.
Formal legislation will enable the creation
of a National Heritage Area to :

* conserve and enhance the natural habitat. * preserve and restore historic landmarks. * develop recreational opportunities. * foster heritage interpretation. * restore damaged land and water areas. * strengthen the region's economic life.
