For Chang-Min: try the ESL (English as a Second Language) department at Oakton Community College, DesPlaines, IL. Best wishes to you. We also have a good ESL department in the south suburbs at South Suburban College in South Holland.

I feel that the board of education should do something about high school student's education. Make standards higher, hold back students, I'm sure they can do something before it's too late.

I'd like to discuss the Snow-Rockefeller-Kerrey erate provision to the '96 Telecommunications Act that Suzanne Prescott mentioned in her early posting. Does anyone know what K-12 schools are doing to qualify for the possible rebates. The public libraries are formulating the technology plans, and the regional systems (like SLS, Burr Ridge) are advising on the process. I think the Illinois Commerce Commission was planning to pass, or has passed?, regulations which would put Illinois in line with the federal rules. Some schools and libraries may receive as much as 80% reimbursement for network costs. Do you think it will work? Will there be another NetDay for helping schools in Illinois reach the onramps to the information highway?

All of the comments in this group are very interesting. I hope that some of you can continue your interest after finals at your colleges. Maybe some who are away at university can join in the discussion while they are home for semester break. How can I motivate myself to learn better, whatever my age? The drive to learn, the spark of curiosity, dies in some as early as age 10. Others, like Satchel Paige, keep vibrantly alert to age 95 or so. "Don't look back; something might be gaining on you."

I think teaching kids at an early age about computers is a great idea. I don't believe computers will be the technology of the year 2000, they're the technology of today. Teaching myself about computers at an early age has only been to my advantage. I'm 18 years old now, and hold two great jobs related to computers (one at my old high school as a consultant, and one as a tech at my college.) Also, use of my computer has been a great help with homework and research. I think it would be wise to push for a law that would bring more computers in classrooms. I think the focus should be on bringing them into smaller schools as their funding is usually smaller than those of bigger schools.

Do you think that children should learn how to use computers starting third grade. I believe that every child should know how to use computers because this will be the technology of the year 2000. Computers are easy to use,and accurate. Should teachers and parents push a law to get computers in the class to better their childrens education?

Should the administration watch over teachers more carefully to make sure their doing their job correctly? I think high school was easy because the teachers didn't put forth much effort. The only thing the teachers care about is that you show up for class and that you don't disturb the class and most likely you get a good grade.

High school was a breeze for me, but after leaving I have come to realize I did not learn much. Is there some way we can teach or show teenager that it is important to really study rather than just get by? Is there a way that the teachers can help out the students more and motivate then more to do more than just get buy? I only wish I had learned some of the stuff they were trying to teach me back then, because that would have made today all that much easier for me.

Why don't teachers like to teach interracially? Teachers in America feel uncomfortable teaching children of a different race or culture. Every child in America deserves the same right as any other child. That is why there are so many children who are uneducated and are more involved in gangs. Minorities deserve the same rights as everyone else. Teachers are in the business to help children out. They need to wake up and make sure that is what they really want to do, otherwise they should not be in the business.

Would many high school students prefer to stay in high school until they have achieved the skills to do well in college, or would they rather leave high school at the first opportunity? Some high schools are now offering the choice ot two diplomas: a standard diploma or a challenge diploma. In some of Europe and some of Africa there is a choice between the "O" level (ordinary) and the "A" level (advanced); the "A" level may require two additional years. It is frustrating to pay tuition and take the time to take developmental courses in college which do not count toward the college degree; the skills are necessary in college or life.

Why do students say that high school was a breeze? I think that certain teacher do not care about the students acheiving a diploma. Should students stay in high school until they have passed a special test to show that they are ready for the college level or even the real world?

What do the newly elected board members in the elementary schools, secondary schools, and community colleges plan to do to improve education (for example, by using the computer technology)? What would the users of this LincolnNet like to see them do (in general, or specifically in regard to NetDay and telecommunications used for retrieving and synthesizing information)?

Is there a moderator for this discussion? I hope this area picks up and some interesting thoughts are shared. How long will it take before schools begin to see some benefit from the erate? The telephone providers, as usual, have taken a greedy stance to increase their own profits, and gouge tax payers and schools. We need to wake up and hold the carriers feet t o the fire. the sooner schools get their erate, the sooner more children can benefit from the Internet and the Web.
