The Calumet region is a Bi-State region that wraps around the southwestern end of Lake Michigan and includes portions of NW Indiana and NE Illinois. The area’s unique physical geography is the result of slow moving glaciers and its natural environments are characterized by remnant beaches, marshes, moraines, small ponds and slow moving rivers. Several rare natural communities can be found here as well as numerous rare species, such as the Black Crowned Night Heron and Blanding’s Turtle. The region is also one of the most industrialized areas on the world and was important in the development of the American economy as well as the development of globally important science and technology. The Calumet region helped to shape the nation’s poli tical landscape and fostered the creation of numerous social institutions and movements. The geology, settlement and industrial development of the Calumet region created a unique blend of industries, communities and natural areas found no where else on earth.
