ALIVE provides individual, classroom, and small group tutoring to improve the 
literacy skills of adults 16 years or older.  Trained ALIVE volunteer tutors 
serve students at 67 sites throughout the Kankakee Community College district. 
Meeting times and places are arranged at the convenience of the student.  The 
student and tutor work together a minimum of 2 hours per week.  Services are 
provided at no cost to the student.  Instructional materials are supplied by

WORKPLACE LITERACY PROGRAM--ALIVE offers Basic Skills Development and Workplace

The typical Hospice patient has a terminal illness with a life expectancy of 
six months or less, understands his condition and its implications, has a 
friend or relative who can assume the role of primary caregiver in the home, 
or resides in an area nursing home with a Hospice contract, has the consent of 
his/her physician, and is a Kankakee County, Peotone/Beecher, or Clifton/Chebanse 
resident.  The Hospice Team of nurses, physicians, home health aides, volunteers, 
clergy, bereavement counselors, and social workers  1) provide compassionate, 
sensitive, hands-on care for dying people and their loved ones,  2) help 
families learn how to manage pain and symptoms, and provide comfort,  
3) furnishes 24-hr. on-call help of nurses and counselors,  4) supports the 
family emotionally by helping family members and patients deal with any 
unresolved issues and cope with feelings,  5) provides special bereavement 
care for the family for up to 13 months,  6) reduces financial stress on the 
family--accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance, serving all 
regardless of ability to pay or background,  7) arranges for medical equipment, 
medications, and medical services,  8) provides connections with community 
service agencies.  Public education services include literature on death and

1)  Old Age Assistance Program provides in certain eligibility circumstances 
    supplemental financial assistance in conjunction with the Federal
    Supplemental Security Income Program to needy persons 65 years and over.
2)  Blind Assistance Program provides in certain eligibility circumstances  
    supplemental financial assistance in conjunction 
    with the Federal Supplemental Security Income Program to needy blind
    persons.
3)  Disability Assurance Program provides in certain eligibility circumstances 
    supplemental financial assistance in conjunction with the Federal 
    Supplemental Security Income Program to the state's seriously disabled
    persons.
4)  Aid to Families with Dependent Children (Aid to Dependent Children) Program 
    provides financial assistance and other services for needy families with 
    minor children through age 18, when family income is insufficient because 
    of unemployment, under-employment, or when the wage earner is lost through 
    death, long illness, imprisonment, divorce, separation, desertion, or 
    the unmarried state of the parents.
5)  Medical Assistance Program under Title XIX of Social Security Act provides 
    medical care for all the above recipients and in addition, medical care for 
    persons who would qualify for one of the above four categories, except
    that income is sufficient to meet regular living expenses but not the cost 
    of medical care, including preventive health care for children and 
    pre-natal and maternity benefits for pregnant women.
6)  Qualified Medicare Beneficiary Program for low-income Medicare beneficiaries 
    which covers Medicare premiums and deductibles.
7)  Provision of services as mandated by the Department under Title XX of the 
    Social Security Act.
8)  Also in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture administers 
    the Food Stamp Program for recipients of both Public Aid and General 
    Assistance and for low-income households not receiving any form of

Provides rehabilitation services to severely disabled, physically or mentally

handicapped person of employable age to become a self-supporting citizen.  
Services offered are:  diagnostic evaluation, vocational training, vocational

to vision loss, mobility, and training for new skills  The department also

Communications Assistants are given the telephone number to be called and the 
type of call to be made; then place the call, relaying the conversation between 
voice and TTY.  This service can be used for calls in Illinois only; long 
distance carriers have national 800 relay numbers that may be used for 
out-of-state calls.  There are no charges for the relay service; regular 
telephone rates apply between caller and person called.  TTYs are loaned at no 
charge by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation to qualified 
Illinois residents who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or have a speech disability.

Part of an international organization of women committed to promoting 
voluntarism and to improving the community through effective action and 
leadership of trained volunteers.  Purpose is educational and charitable, 
reaching out to young women of all races, religions, and national origins who 
demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism. The Junior League of 
Kankakee County's main focus is on "Children at Risk."  Projects 
include the Neediest Children's Project where children from area schools are 
clothed, and the Pledge for Life Project through which the Life Education 
Center mobile unit is operated.  The mobile unit is a high-tech educational 
tool that teaches K-8 students about their bodies, nutrition, peer pressure, 
etc., and helps them to make wise life style choices.  The Volunteer 
Recognition Luncheon honors area volunteers in seven categories; it is run in 
conjunction with the United Way and the First American Bank.  The JLK also 
operates the Stone Barn, an historic building in downtown Kankakee, which is

Volunteers interact with children in the computer lab, field trips, crafts,

hours, providing a safe haven and an alternative to being on the streets.  The 
mission is to help youth of all backgrounds, particularly those from

Provides comprehensive clinic system for initial diagnosis and management of 
40 neuromuscular diseases; physical, occupational, and respiratory therapy; 
genetic counseling, and flu shots.  Assists in the provision and repair of 
select durable medical equipment.  Provides transportation to and from MDA 
clinic, summer camp program, public health education programs, and support 
groups.  Individuals diagnosed with one of 40 neuromuscular diseases are 
eligible for services.  No fees.  Hours:  8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. M-F.
