INTRODUCTION

    This completely revised 1995 edition of the HELP Book has been prepared to assist the people of the greater Kankakee area to:

    1. Find human services help within the county or, if not available here, in other parts of the state or country,

    2. Inform citizens of the wide variety of human services provided by agencies within our county, and

    3. Aid in identifying human service areas where resources are lacking, to assist in future planning.

    Even as this information was being compiled, new services are becoming available and existing agencies change what they offer. Not all agencies responded to the invitation to provide information, so our listings are incomplete. Please assist the United Way with the next edition by calling 932-7476 to inform us of changes and additions or deletions as soon as you become aware that they are needed.

    Names, as always, can be a problem. Some agencies are popularly known by something shorter than the full official name. For example, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is often called "DCFS." It is listed here under its full name. "Red Cross" has other possible longer names; it is listed here as "American Red Cross." Some other agencies may be found listed by initials or acronyms; if you don't find the name you want in the Table of Contents, try looking in the Subject Index under the type of service you want. Some 24-hour hotlines are staffed by people at all times; some use an answering machine after regular business hours. The United Way of Kankakee County cannot take responsibility for the quality of services provided by a particular agency, but would appreciate your feedback if problems arise.
