    INSTALLATION

To begin, run Windows and insert the LINCOLN Internet Setup Kit disk into a floppy drive on your system. From inside Windows, pull down the File menu from the Program Manager menu and select Run. Windows will prompt you for the name of the application to run. Type a:setup if you have inserted the disk into drive A; type b:setup if you have inserted the disk into drive B. Click OK.

A Welcome! screen will appear. Read the window's contents, then click YES to continue.

A LINCOLN Internet Setup Install window will appear. You will have a choice between Easy Install and Custom Install. The Easy Install program (the default) copies the required files to your hard disk and configures your system. The Custom Install program allows you to select which items in the kit you would like to install and where those items should be installed.

Windows is a trademark of Microsoft Corporation.

    TCP Manager 2.0B Setup

You have just completed either the Easy Install or Custom Install program. A Write - Readme.Wri windows has appeared on your screen. The Write - Readme.Wri window contains step-by-step instructions for configuring TCP Manager 2.0B (information identical to the information you are currently reading in this section, TCP Manager 2.0B Setup). Assuming you have a hard copy of the TCP Manager 2.0B Setup in front of you, you may click the minus sign in the upper left-hand corner of the Write - Readme.Wri window and select Close to clear your screen. You should take this step in order to avoid inadvertently double-clicking the icons on the graphics within this text file. If you double-click one of the icons, Windows will open a graphics program, which could confuse you. (If you would like to open the Readme.Wri window in the future, double-click the icon Trumpet Winsock readme - see Figure 1.)

Before you can access LINCOLN's services or the Internet using SLIP/PPP, you must configure the TCP Manager 2.0B program. To configure TCP Manager 2.0B, go to the LINCOLN Services window within the Program Manager window and double-click the TCP Manager 2.0B icon (Figure 1).

    Figure 1. LINCOLN Services window

    1. A Trumpet Winsock window will appear (Figure 2). Pull down the Dialler menu and select number.cmd. The number.cmd script allows you to set the modem number for connecting to LINCOLN (283-8910). This step is required.

    • If you have to dial a number to get an outside line, enter that number followed by a comma.
    • If you are outside the 708 area code, such as 815, you must enter 1 708 283-8910
    • if you have callwaiting, you must disable it. The most common way to do this is to enter *70 followed by a comma. ex. *70,9,235-4100 this will disable call waiting and dial 9 to get an outside line

    Figure 2. Trumpet Winsock window

The first of three smaller Trumpet Winsock windows will appear; it will partially cover the larger Trumpet Winsock window (Figure 3). Follow the instructions displayed in the larger Trumpet Winsock window. (To view the instructions, you may have to uncover the text in the larger window by moving the smaller window, as it appears, to the side.) You must supply information in all three of the smaller windows.

    2. Pull down the Dialler menu and select username.cmd (Figure 2). Follow the instructions displayed in the Trumpet Winsockwindow. The username.cmd script allows you to enter your LINCOLN UNIX username and password. Two smaller windows will appear in succession prompting you for your username and password, respectively. This step is optional; however, if you choose not to run this script, you will be prompted for your username and password each time you connect to LINCOLN.

    3. Pull down the Dialler menu and select modem.cmd (Figure 2). Follow the instructions displayed in the Trumpet Winsock window. The modem.cmd script tests your modem for compatibility with the Trumpet Winsock program. If you have a Hayes-compatible modem, it should work with this program. If your modem is not Hayes-compatible, refer to your modem manual for configuration commands. This step is optional but recommended.

This completes Installation and TCP Manager 2.0B Setup. You are now ready to run Trumpet Winsock 2.0B and any Windows Socket client programs, such as Netscape (Netscape must be acquired independently).

    Making the SLIP/PPP Connection

Pull down the Dialler menu and select Login (Figure 2). This will use what you configured in Steps 1-3 to dial in and connect to LincolnNet, your Internet service provider. Once the connection has been established and you see the message Performing bootp...Bootp successful, (Figure 4), you can minimize the Trumpet Winsock window by clicking the down arrow in the upper right hand corner of the window.

To use Netscape, double-click on its icon. (If you do not have Netscape, refer to the instructions for WS_FTP and download a copy of Netscape 2.02, 3.03 or 4.02)

When you have finished using Netscape, close it. Then restore Trumpet Winsock, pull down the dialler menu, and select Bye to hang up the modem (Figure 2).
