• Use a Web browser, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.

Make sure your modem is set up and working properly.

If you have installed scripting previously, you must uninstall it before continuing in this section.

In order to use the 32-bit versions of Netscape, you must have Windows Dial-up Networking installed and configured correctly. To see if you have Dial-up Networking installed:

1. Double-click "My Computer."
   
2. Double-click the "Control Panel" icon.
   
3. Double-click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon.
   
4. Click the "Windows Setup" tab in the Add/Remove Programs Properties window.
   
5. Click "Communications" (within the scroll window).
   
6. Click the "Details..." button.
   
   1. In the Communications window, if the box in front of "Dial-up Networking" is not checked, go to "How to Install Dial-up Networking" and follow the steps.
      
   2. If the box in front of "Dial-up Networking" is checked (Figure 1), you have Dial-up Networking installed. In this case, click the "Cancel" button to close the Communications window, then click the "Cancel" button to close the Add/Remove Programs Properties window. Proceed to "Configuring Your Dial-up Networking" and follow the steps.

How to Install Dial-up Networking

1. Click the box in front of "Dial-up Networking" so that it contains a checkmark (Figure 1).
   
2. Click the "OK" button.
   
3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, click the "OK" button to install the software.
   
4. Insert Windows installation disks or CD-ROM as required.
   During or after installation, a window will appear informing you that you must provide computer and workgroup names that will identify your computer on the network. (When you install Dial-up Networking, Windows installs drivers that allow your computer to connect to a Local Area Network.) Click the "OK" button in this window. In the Network window, for "Computer Name:" type your last name, and for "Workgroup:" type HOME. Leave "Computer Description:" blank. Click the "Close" button.
   
5. When installation is complete, click the "OK" button.
   
6. Restart your computer.
   (NOTE: When you restart your computer or the next time you start Windows, you might see a window that asks for your username and password. This is a Microsoft security option. If you don't want the computer to ask for this information every time you start your computer, type your name in the "username" block and click the "OK" button. Do not type your password.
   
   

1. Double-click "My Computer."
   
2. Double-click the "Control Panel" icon.
   
3. Double-click the "Network" icon.
   Within the Network window you should see "Dial-Up Adapter"; if you don't, return to "How to Install Dial-up Networking" and follow the steps.
   Your computer and LincolnNet's computers must "speak" the same language (or protocol). For your dial-up to work properly, you must install one protocol:
   1. Click the "Add..." button.
      
   2. Click "Protocol."
      
   3. Click the "Add..." button.
      You will see the Select Network Protocol window (Figure 2).

   4. Under "Manufacturers:" click "Microsoft."
      
   5. Under "Network Protocols:" click "TCP/IP."
      
   6. Click the "OK" button. You will be returned to the Network screen, within whose window you will see "Dial-up Adapter" and "TCP/IP"(Figure 3)*.

   NOTE: If you have more than one TCP/IP listed in this window, you must delete all but one. It doesn't matter which one you remove. Also, there may be additional protocols listed in this window. If you access only LincolnNet and only through dial-up, you can remove all protocols except Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP. To remove a protocol, click the one you want to remove, then click the "Remove" button. You might see "Client for Microsoft Networks" in this window. Microsoft Networks is Microsoft's version of America OnLine and CompuServe.

4. Click the "OK" button in the Network screen.
   
5. Insert Windows installation disks or CD-ROM as required.
   
6. When asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?" click the "YES" button. Dial-up Networking will not work unless you have restarted your computer. Go on to "Creating Connection Icons".
   
   

1. Double-click "My Computer."
   
2. Double-click "Dial-Up Networking."
   
3. Double-click the LINCOLN icon.
   
4. In the Connect To window (Figure 4) type your LincolnNet username and password.
   
5. Click the "Connect" button. You will hear your modem dial and connect.
   
6. When your computer has connected to LincolnNet, a terminal window will appear and you will be prompted to enter your username and password.
   
7. When you see the LINCOLN> prompt, type: ppp and "ENTER".
   
8. Click the "Continue (F7)" button immediately.
   
9. The Connected to LINCOLN window should appear. If you have Netscape installed already, you can begin browsing the Internet by double-clicking the Netscape icon.
   
10. When you are done, click the "Disconnect" button in the Connected to LINCOLN window.
