The Teens of HCC are creating a mentoring program to help the younger children of their neighborhood.

FRIEND-TO-FRIEND

links teenagers with younger children to give friendship, guidance and advise.

Teens in Hegewisch and the East Side are creating a Drama group to address issues of violence and other realties of teenage life.

Teens and Pre-teens are working with adults to produce   MANIAC MANOR, an annual haunted event entertaining thousands of visitors.

Youth have always been the focus of the Hegewisch Community Committee. Concerns about young people and the problem of truancy first motivated residents to form the committee in 1938.

In the early years, the group organized sports leagues, camp-outs, and Scouting.

The world is a very different place in 2004 than it was in 1938, yet the basic needs of children remain the same. Children still need a safe place to play, learn and grow. They need caring adults to guide their development.  They need an uncritical ear to listen to their problems. They need knowledge about the dangers of making poor decisions about alcohol, drugs, and crime. They need someone to stand by them when they are troubled. The HCC continues to provide all of these things as well as new ones.

Summer Programs and After school Programs combine recreation socializing and learning in a safe, positive environment. Sports, games and outings continue to give healthful opportunities for personal growth. The Community Center is open for youth to "hang out", safe from violence and intimidation. Youth and Teen Committees provide a forum to make decisions in a self-governing, democratic model. Staff and volunteers provide leadership, instruction and supervision in passing on the ideals of civic responsibility.
