City of Chicago Heights

Street and Public Works Department

The Street Department is reminding residents about the regulations for the weekly residential trash collection service.

Residents may put out garbage, recyclable items and yard waste no earlier than 4 p.m. on the day before pickup and no later than 7 a.m. on the scheduled day.

Garbage must be placed in covered containers for both curbside and alley collection. The containers should be no larger than 32 gallons. Containers should be removed from curbside or alley as soon as possible after garbage is collected.

Recyclable items must be placed in blue bags bearing the Chicago Heights city logo. All recyclables may be put in the same blue bag. The city's scavenger service provider collects the bags and takes them to an area recycling center. The blue logo bags identify the city's recycling for revenue purposes.

Residents may recycle newspapers; aluminum and tin cans; clear, brown and green glass; plastic milk and pop bottles; glossy-page magazines; junk mail; telephone books; corrugated cardboard and paper boxes such as cereal boxes. The plastic bags containing the cereal should be removed from the boxes.

Yard waste pickup begins April 1 and ends November 30. Yard waste must be placed in separate clearly-marked containers or biodegradable paper bags.

The city provides bulk item pickup service by appointment. Call the Street Department at 708-756-5362 to arrange for pickup.
