HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR PARK DISTRICT

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District has served Flossmoor for more than 25 years. The communities of Homewood and Flossmoor merged their park districts in 1969; today H-F Park District maintains over 200 acres of open space, 30 parks and eight facilities - including a racquet/fitness club, two outdoor pools, an ice skating arena, recreational lake, environmental education center and a community center.
Throughout the year the H-F Park District offers more than 1,000 programs for the residents of all age sport programs and activities (including fishing, boating, camping, gymnastics, plus team and individual sports), as well as programs and classes in health/fitness, arts & crafts, dance, drama and much more. Leisure activities, trips, concerts, and special events are offered for residents of all ages. Additionally, many activities are offered to senior citizens at the Marie Irwin Community Center.
The H-F Park District has been the past recipient of the National Gold Medal Award presented by the National Sporting Goods Association. The award is the most prestigious honor bestowed on park and recreation agencies in the U.S. and cited the district for its facilities, services to the community, fiscal management, long-range planning and conservation of open space.
The Iron Oaks Environmental Learning Center is a joint project of the Homewood-Flossmoor and Olympia Fields park districts. The 33-acre nature preserve is home to a cross-country ski center, an adventure center and numerous exhibits throughout the year.
Among the more than 1,000 programs sponsored by the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District is Family Fun Fest, held on Independence Day following the traditional parade. With the Homewood Chamber of Commerce, the Park District co-sponsors an annual Art Fair each spring; the Starry Nights concert series, featuring such artists as the Symphonic Pops Orchestra of Chicago, Tom Chapin and Marie Osmond, is also a Park District production.
More than 5,000 members enjoy the amenities of the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club. Its expansion is aimed at providing even more state-of-the-art facilities and services. Existing and planned facilities include indoor racquet-ball and tennis courts, fitness center with exercise equipment, a running/walking track, locker rooms, lounge and tennis viewing areas, child care, meeting rooms and offices.
The park district also offers a Wellness and Health Education Center, which is a joint project of the H-F Park District and Ingalls Memorial Hospital. It provides on-site sports medecine, comprehensive health education, physical therapy and cardiac fitness programs. The Racquet and Fitness Club is not only supported by membership fees, but also contributes thousands of dollars each year to the general and recreational funds of the park district.
Gretchen Goldberg, M.D. Memorial Park is named for the wife of Dr. Alan Goldberg, who donated 3.3 acres of land for the new Park District administration building and park. It features play and recreation areas and a pavilion for picnics and birthday parties. A one-quarter mile pedestrian pathway winds through a natural wet prairie, preserved woodlands; and an interpretive history wall add an interesting and informative amenity to the park.
