Flossmoor Public Library
The Flossmoor Public Library serves not only as an invaluable resource of information and leisure reading, but also as a popular community center for various activities, events and informative programs.
The library's circulating collection includes over 56,000 books, magazines, books on tape, and music on CD and cassette. The library's reference collection contains extensive print materials as well as selected automated resources. CD-ROM products available for in-house use include EBSCO Magazine Summaries (an index of over 498 periodicals); the Chicago Tribune, Granger's World of Poetry, and Select Phone (millions of US residential and business listings).
The library's membership in the Suburban Library System and its participation in SWAN (System-Wide Area Network) allows it to provide public access to an extensive range of materials and services. The SWAN database is a cooperative on-line catalog which contains the holdings of over 75 libraries. Patrons can search SWAN from computer terminals in the library or from their home or office computer. The library can borrow materials from other libraries for Flossmoor patrons. In addition, patrons may use their library card to directly check out materials from public libraries throughout the state, as well as from local college libraries. Access to SWAN can be accomplished by dialing in at (708)325-9272 or (708)325-9403, 24 hours a day. When the "CONNECT" message appears, press CTRL-Q then CTRL-R. The Welcome screen will appear to begin a search. If another screen appears first, press ENTER and then O to access the Welcome screen.
The friendly, service-oriented staff is on hand to provide service seven days a week, including reference and readers' advisory both at the library and over the telephone. The youth services department offers opportunities for younger patrons to expand their horizons through year-round story times and other special programs.
Available to the public, as well as civic, community and social organizations, is the library's multi-purpose room. A bulletin board and brochure rack are also available for publicizing local events and programs. The library's display case regularly features a variety of exhibits of interest to people of all ages.
The Friends of the Flossmoor Library have established a Microcomputer Center in the Library which houses microcomputers, color printers and a variety of software. These items are available for public use for a nominal fee. The Friends is an organization of 200+ volunteer residents who work together in support of the library. New members are always welcome and can get involved through the group's lively "Coffee & Conversation" book discussion series. Contact the library for meeting dates and times.
