Program for Adaptive Learning
The Program for Adaptive Learning(PAL)serves students, aged 6
to 21 years, who are diagnosed within the trainable to profound
mental retardation range and/or whose limitations are primarily
due to pervasive developmental disorders and autism. Students may
also exhibit physical, vision and/or hearing disabilities. The
PAL provides the enviornment where students can demonstrate their
potential in the areas of communication, socialization, daily
living skills, mobility and pre-vocational activities.
The Program services children residing in the SPEED geographical
area, and also, under a cooperative agreement with ECHO accepts
students from the ECHO districts.
The Program provides services at the SPEED Center located in
Chicago Heights, and in classrooms located in standard elementary,
junior high, and high school facilities within the SPEED
geographical area. PAL students have selective access to activities
in community enviornments. PAL has two classrooms, which are job
oriented, located in a local University and in an office building.
The credentialed and/or licensed teachers and support staff work
as an interdiciplinary team in order to provide an enviornment
appropriate to the child's level of functioning. Members of the
interdiciplinary team include teachers' assistants, speech/language
pathologists, behavior therapist, vision and hearing itinerants,
social worker, nurse, occupational therapist, and physical
therapist.
