AUTUMN BOOK BONANZA! Best Sale Ever!
Our 30th Anniversary Sale was conducted by the Friends of the Park Forest Public Library. It was held on October 1st and 2nd, 2005.

A BIG thank you to Helene Cox for 20 years of book sale chairmanship.

Helene Cox's Report of the 30th Anniversary Book Sale:
The autumn book sale, celebrating thirty years of such offerings, was a colossal success.  The selection of books and recorded materials was outstanding, and the addition of Martin Zwart’s bequest of art books increased   interest to the event.  The combination of quality materials, and eager buyers resulted in happy book lovers, and added funds for library purchases.  It remains an excellent resource for turning old books into new ones.

It could not happen without donations from patrons, without the dedicated volunteers who work at the book sales, without the cooperation of library staff, and certainly, without the year round book sorters, the “moles”.  Those energetic,  devoted workers are Ellen Eads, Melinda Geist, Homer Heagley, Lois Hinde, Dora Holly, Susan McGoldrick, Dean Oedzes, Don Struck, and Justine Wheeler.  John Ray sorted and readied the Zwart art books for sale in masterful fashion.  Will Brown provided overtime efforts in a variety of tasks over the weekend.  Karen Blackful, filled in over and above the call of volunteerism. Mitchell Cox, with help from Adam Cox, kept perfect track of the money, acted as troubleshooter, and hauled books. To all of these people, and those unnamed, thanks and thanks again.  It was a satisfying weekend to all those people involved in it.

Donations of books, recorded material, magazines, and puzzles are welcomed year round, just never on Sunday.

FRIENDS’ HOLIDAY TREAT
Saturday, December 3, 2005

Mark your calendar for the Friends’ event.  Ushering in the holiday season, there will be a bake sale, featuring treats donated by local bakers, a mini-book sale, mini only in the hours the sale is open, and the celestial Harp Angels, Beverly Myrow’s young musicians.

The popular pecans, Library Nuts, will be available again, plain ones, and three varieties of flavored pecans.  All are eight dollars a bag, the latter are excellent for gifts, as well as snacking.

And rumor has it that Santa Claus will drop by during the afternoon.

The festivities will happen between 10 am and 3 pm.  Please attend.  (And…donate a treat to sell, if you can.)

Friends' News, Summer 2005:

From the President’s Desk…

From time to time, we like to report to our members the status of the  Friends’ group:  its mission, assets, membership, goals and accomplishments, strengths and weaknesses.

Currently, The Friends has about 270 Park Forest resident members, 75 Olympia Fields members, 60 suburban members, and 80 out-of-state and Chicago members. Recently, our Olympia Fields and out-of- state numbers have increased. Most of our members are regular book sale patrons and active volunteers.

Our treasury contains about  $5,000 with most of the money derived from memberships and renewals in addition to our annual bake sale and raffle donations. From our funds, we have been able to purchase many items for the library, and we purchase supplies and refreshments for many library events such as the summer reading program, Potpourri lectures, senior travel series, etc. Book sale proceeds go directly to the library’s budget. The sales for the 2004 calendar year totaled about $18,000 which is a considerable amount, especially compared to other libraries of our size.

Finally, we feel that we have maintained our mission to support the library, involve the community, and remain a positive and energetic force for the library. Our strength as an organization remains our solid core of volunteers, our great community, our amazing donations, a dedicated board, and a positive relationship with the staff and board of trustees. We enjoy what we do, and we enjoy each others’ companionship.

On the less positive side, we have had some problems with our mailing which we will have solved by our next book sale on October 1st and 2nd. In addition, we would like to find a qualified individual to publicize and sell our rare books in exchange for a consignment fee. We also are looking for a few new committed board members to assist us in finding creative ways to raise money, recruit  new members, and support the library.

Please call us with your ideas or attend our next board meeting on Wednesday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the library.
