At Chicago South Region we're all about building houses! We've been doing it since 1988 and we have been there as 13 families moved in. We are proud to be a part of , a non profit organization founded by Millard Fuller in 1976 with more than 900 affiliates in the United States and working in over 200 communities around the world. Our families come to us out of a variety of situations and show a willingness to be active participants in the building of their homes. They must spend 350 hours of "sweat equity" on their own home and an additional 100 hours of time helping on other projects. Prior to making application families are required to put in 10 hours which is applied to their time when they are selected. We provide no interest loans to qualifying families to cover the cost of the property and construction expenses and require that the family assumes responsibility for insurance, utilities and other maintenance expenses. Monthly payments are made just as mortgage payments and those funds are used to finance the cost of continuing construction of future homes. Salary ranges for qualifying families are between $16,000 and $19, 000 and homeowners must have a steady income. These are hard working people who do not qualify for conventional bank loans and would otherwise not have the opportunity to become a homeowner. Volunteers are essential to our organization. Most of our construction work is done by people who are just willing to help. Skill levels range from expert to beginner and someone is always willing to share what they know. If you would like more information regarding home ownership or if you have some time on your hands and would like to volunteer, please contact us at Monday through Friday 9:00-4:00 OR
